Kamakura is a city in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is located on the Pacific Ocean, 31 miles (50 km) southwest of Tokyo. In the past, it was the capital of Japan, which makes it a city with a very rich history. Kamakura is best known for its large seated Buddha statue which is the emblem of the city that you must see, but it has many other interesting places to visit. Despite the influx of tourists, Kamakura's nature is lush, which makes it particularly enjoyable to visit from spring to autumn. In particular, it is a beautiful destination in June for hydrangeas, during which the humidity accentuates the green of the vegetation. In the north of the city, there is a large concentration of Zen temples. Very extensive, it shelters more than ten temples and sanctuaries, of which here are the most important. First, the Egara Tenjin-sha, with its vermilion red color and its gardens, delights the visitors. It is frequented by schoolchildren and students who come to pray for the success of their exams. Sugimoto-dera, built in 734, is the oldest temple of the city that is worth a visit. It is also known as the "moss temple" because of the long moss-covered stairs leading to it. There, you will be able to admire statues of the eleven-headed goddess Kannon. A little further on, Hokokuji, the bamboo temple, attracts visitors for its bamboo grove. Finally, at the edge of the city, Zuisen-ji, a Zen temple founded at the end of the Kamakura period, is famous for its beautiful garden. Visiting the temples of Kamakura is not the only activity popular with tourists and Japanese. Kamakura is also the meeting point of many surfers and swimmers. You can also enjoy its beaches Yuigahama and Zaimokuza which are equipped and supervised for swimming in summer. You will have understood, Kamakura is a total immersion in the Japanese culture with the visit of its numerous temples full of history.
